One of the top things on my bucket list for 2024 was to see the cherry blossoms in Gyeongju, South Korea. I’d been planning it since last autumn and even booked my accommodation early, knowing it’s one of the most popular spots to visit during spring. But, as we all know, the weather can be so unpredictable! I had to adjust my plans a few times, and in the end, I could only make it for a day trip. I kept checking Instagram posts and the Gyeongju city website, which was updated with pictures showing the cherry blossom status. Of course, I also kept an eye on the weather forecast daily to make sure I’d visit when it wasn’t raining.
But in the end, it was totally worth it! I was finally able to tick off one big item from my bucket list for this year. Now, let me share some of the best spots to see the cherry blossoms in Gyeongju!
1. Daereungwon Ancient Tombs Stonewall Walkway (대릉원돌담길)
Address: 493-26 Hwangnam-dong Gyeongju-si Gyeongsangbuk-do
After arriving at the train station, my first destination was the Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Stonewall Walkway, nestled in the heart of historic Gyeongju. This popular spot offers stunning views of Cherry Blossoms set against the backdrop of ancient tombs. I really enjoyed strolling along the stonewall, taking in the beauty of the blossoms and of course taking lots and lots of photos. As you continue walking towards the Observatory, you’ll find another famous spot.
2. Donggung Gwa Wolji (동궁과월지)
Address: 506-1 Inwang-dong Gyeongju-si Gyeongsangbuk-do (경북 경주시 원화로 102 안압지)
This historical site looks straight out of a fairytale during cherry blossom season. The pink blooms reflecting on the pond, especially at night when the lights come on, make it feel like a dream. It’s one of the most popular spots in Gyeongju during spring, and for good reason—the combination of history, nature, and the soft glow of the lights is unforgettable. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to fully explore it this time around, but it’s at the top of my list for the next visit. If you’re in Gyeongju during cherry blossom season, make sure you don’t miss it!
3. North road of Cheomseongdae Observatory
This road is lined with cherry blossom trees that turn into a dreamy pink tunnel in the spring. It’s such a lovely spot for a walk or bike ride, especially when the petals start falling like pink snow. The area is super peaceful, with open fields and little traditional houses nearby that add to the charm. Don’t forget your camera—this place is picture-perfect!
4. Oreung Stonewall Walkway (오릉돌담길)
One of my absolute favorite spots to visit and photograph was the Oreung Stonewall Walkway. Located just a 25-minute walk from the Observatory, this place offers a wonderful sight of beautiful Cherry Blossom trees alongside an ancient Korean-style wall. What made it even more special was the tranquility of the place—it was refreshingly uncrowded compared to other popular spots in the area.
5. Yesterday Cafe
Address: 23-27 Hwang-dong Gyeongju-si Gyeongsangbuk-do (경북 경주시 양정로 90 카페yesterday)
Opening Hours: daily from 11:00 until 19:00
This time I, unfortunately, had no time to visit the Yesterday Cafe in Geyongju but I had seen many beautiful photos of it online. The cafe is located next to the read with a beautiful and big Cherry Blossom tree in front of it.
6. Heungmu-ro (경주 흥무로 벚꽃길)
Address: 231-3 Seondo-dong, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do (경북 경주시 충효동 7-1)
This is one of the most famous cherry blossom roads in Gyeongju. The trees stretch for kilometers, forming a beautiful arch of pink petals. Whether you’re driving, biking, or just walking, it’s an unforgettable experience.
7. Yard Cafe (야드카페)
Address: 431-7 Cheongun-dong Gyeongju-si Gyeongsangbuk-do
If you love seeing cherry blossoms Gyeongju and coffee, this is the spot for you. Yard Cafe is surrounded by blooming trees, so you can sip your coffee while soaking in the view. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy spring.
8. Hwangnyongwon (황룡원)
Address: Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongju-si, Sinpyeong-dong, EXPO-ro, 40 KR (경북 경주시 엑스포로 40)
The towering pagoda at Hwangnyongwon looks absolutely gorgeous when surrounded by cherry blossoms. The soft pink flowers make the golden pagoda stand out even more, creating a scene that’s straight-up stunning. It’s the perfect spot to snap some photos, especially around sunset when everything glows. The area is spacious and peaceful, so it’s great for a relaxing walk while taking in the spring vibes. Whether you’re into history, photography, or just pretty places, this one’s a must-see!
9. Bomunjeong Pavilion (보문정)
Address: 424-33 Bomun-ro, Sinpyeong-dong, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do (경북 경주시 신평동)
You can find beautiful weeping Cherry Blossom trees, also called Prunus pendula, near the Bomunjeong Pavilion. These trees aren’t as common in Korea so it is definitely a unique and graceful sight.
10. Bomunho Lake
The Bomunho Lake area is a beautiful place to take a stroll, enjoy some coffee, and relax. There are multiple parks all around the lake, many of which have beautifully blooming cherry blossom trees.
When I visited Gyeongju this Spring, I was only able to explore the area close to Aden cafe (경북 경주시 보문로 424-34) on the east side of the lake due to time constraints. But I do know that next time I visit Gyeongju, I will spend a lot more time by Bomunho Lake. It’s such a beautiful and peaceful area that is just perfect for relaxation.
